Attention all beach bums, bros, skateboarders, and fans of ‘90s party rock— alternative rockers 311 are returning with a new album, Universal Pulse. The Bob Rock-produced set (their first since 2009’s Uplifter) hits record stores on July 19th, but you can take a preview listen to its first single “Sunset In July” right here.
Verdict: The trippy guitar licks and keyboard stabs are pretty cool, and the chorus is pretty stand 311 fare… but is anybody really expecting these guys to reinvent the wheel twelve (!!!) albums in?
(Laugh all you like, but Nick Hexum’s voice always fondly reminds me of barbequing, Fourth of July weekends, and other assorted outdoor summer activities I’d be partaking in right now if I didn’t have central air conditioning and YouTube videos to catch up on. Cie la vie…)
