311 Reveals New Single – “Sunset in July” (LA Music Blog)

Although I’m a metal head through and through, I’ve always had a soft spot for 311. I know–they couldn’t be farther from the blast beat laden tracks that generally rule my queue, but for whatever reason it may be, 311 will forever remain a mainstay among my musical favorites.

Every few years or so, the band returns with an album chock full of feel-good summer jams and anthemic hits, and 2011 is one of those years. After releasing Uplifter two years back, 311 has returned with Universal Pulse, their tenth studio album, due out in July.

While few details have slipped regarding the release, the band has confirmed working with producer Bob Rock, who also manned the helms on their previous record, among a laundry list of others. The first single, “Sunset in July,” will hit radio on June 14th, and in the meantime, the track is currently streaming at Spin.com. The band has also assembled a visual video of the album’s artwork featuring the track, which can be viewed below.

Frontman Nick Hexum commented that the track is “about how the more fun you have, the faster life flies by. Most nights in July we’re on stage as the sun is setting. You can actually see the crowd losing their inhibitions as the daylight fades away. We get off on watching the crowd at our shows, which inspired the song’s chorus. People in the first few rows look like they’re in another dimension. Maybe they’re high – but we like to think it’s the power of music!”

311 will be hitting the road this summer with Sublime With Rome for their annual Unity Tour, and from August 4-6, they will host the inaugural 311 Pow Wow Festival in Live Oak, Florida. The three-night event will feature four sets from 311, including a full performance of their 1997 album, Transistor, as well as sets from the Deftones, Reel Big Fish, the Dirty Heads, Ozomatli, and SOJA.
