311's music percolates with good vibes, mixing rock, reggae and rap to create audience-friendly tunes. Their last album was called Uplifter, and that cheery, utopian tone seems to have continued on their latest, Universal Pulse, which will be dropping July 19.
Produced by Bob Rock, who also was behind the boards for their last disc, Universal Pulse is a return to old-school 311, at least according to frontman Nick Hexum in a recent interview with Spin. "We wanted to bring back that shuffle feel," Hexum said. "Our old stuff had a lot of that. We bring it back on 'Sunset in July,' as well as some heavy guitars."
While 311 continue to have a sizable audience, they haven't been a mainstream rock success for several years, although their cover of the Cure's "Love Song" was a big modern-rock hit back in 2004. Maybe Hexum's comments about wanting to get back in touch with the sound of the band's "old stuff" is also an attempt to regain a bit of that wide appeal they enjoyed during the mid-'90s.
