311′s song percolates with good vibes, blending rock, reggae and swat to create audience-friendly tunes. Their final manuscript was called Uplifter, and that cheery, ideal tinge seems to have continued on their latest, Universal Pulse, which will be dropping Jul 19.
Produced by Bob Rock, who also was behind the play for their final disc, Universal Pulse is a lapse to old-school 311, at least according to frontman Nick Hexum in a new talk with Spin. “We wanted to move behind that trifle feel,” Hexum said. “Our old things had a lot of that. We move it behind on ‘Sunset in July,’ as good as some complicated guitars.”
While 311 continue to have a large audience, they haven’t been a mainstream stone success for several years, nonetheless their cover of the Cure‘s “Love Song” was a big modern-rock strike behind in 2004. Maybe Hexum’s comments about wanting to get behind in hold with the sound of the band’s “old stuff” is also an try to recover a bit of that far-reaching interest they enjoyed during the mid-’90s.
